First Google Hangout

I just participated in my first Google Hangout and loved it!  It was really awesome to be able to meet and have a discussion with the classmates from all across the United States in different time zones.

As I sat and listened to our discussion, I was thinking of other possibilities Google Hangout could have.  Being able to chat with someone who could not attend a parent/teacher conference is one idea my "class guide" (aka the instructor) suggested.  Then, I thought about a student who was not able to make it to school and has questions on his absent work.  Being able to ask an expert some questions from my students.  This is only the beginning of many ideas!

What ways have you used Google Hangout?

  1. Technology is so cool! It is truly amazing to see where it will take us in teaching. This year I had a parent/teacher confernce via facetime. The parent was sick in the hospital and really wanted to talk with me. Dad came to the conference, and we facetimed with Mom in the hospital. Definitely a first for me!

    1. I never thought of this as an option. This would be a great way to see all parents!

  2. I missed our first GHO but watched online. I also "hung out" with Jacqui today. What an amazing tool to be able to use. I agree that it would be a great way to "meet" with parents and students for many reasons. Wouldn't it be fun to "hang out" with a group on the weekend? The possibilities are endless!

  3. Another wonderful use of Google Hangouts is for students out of school for the day (sick or something like that--even a snow day). You connect with them over a Google Hangout when your class starts and shut it down when it ends. Face the GHO screen to the Smartscreen or wherever your center of activity is.

  4. Hi Julie! I was on the second GHO and it was just Jacqui and I which was great, but I didn't get to put a face to all of your comments and blog posts. Last year my class did a Mystery Skype; it was only once, but my fourth graders loved it. It is the same idea as an GHO, just a different application. I'd definitely recommend it. I'm hoping to fit in one a month next year. So many skills were intertwined in the process: listening & speaking, problem solving, geography, technology, etc.
